Planetary celebrations broke out when, on March 15, the president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, and Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, co-founder of Tompkins Conservation and the widow of Douglas Tompkins, signed an historic agreement for Chile to accept the largest private land donation ever to a country. Now, 4.5 million hectares will be protected in southern Chile with the creation of a new Patagonia National Parks Network.
The new network of parks is thanks in part to Tompkins Conservation donating 407,625 hectares, while at the same time the Chilean government is annexing another 949,368 hectares toward the creation of three new national parks: Pumalin, Melimoyu and Patagonia. In addition, they will significantly expand three other existing parks at Hornopiren, Corcovado and Magdalena Island.
Moreover, Chile is re-classifying four national reserves as national parks, thereby establishing Alcalufes National Park and Cerro Castillo National Park, as well as adding the Lago Cochrane and Lago Jeinimeni national reserves to the new Patagonia National Park.
Altogether, these new parks will form part of the new network encompassing 17 parks that cover a total land area greater in size than Switzerland.
Yvon Chouinard, founder of the outdoor Patagonia clothing company, told the British newspaper The Guardian that Chile is now among the world's countries with the highest percentage of protected lands. “That puts Chile right up there with Costa Rica in terms of the percentage of protected lands,” he said, adding that the parks donated by Tompkins Conservation “are tourist-ready parks with trails and cabins and infrastructure.”
Las celebraciones estallaron alrededor del mundo cuando, el pasado 15 de marzo, la presidenta de Chile, Michelle Bachelet, y Kristine McDivitt, cofundadora de Tompkins Conservation y viuda de Douglas Tompkins, firmaron un acuerdo histórico para dar pie a la mayor donación privada de tierras a una nación. Ahora, 4,5 millones de hectáreas quedarán protegidas en el sur de Chile con la creación de la nueva Red de Parques Nacionales de la Patagonia.
Para la creación de esta red de parques, Tompkins Conservation donó 407.625 hectáreas, mientras que el Estado de Chile anexó 949.368 hectáreas. Así se crearán tres nuevos parques nacionales: Pumalín, Melimoyu y Patagonia. Además, se ampliarán otros tres parques ya existentes: Hornopirén, Corcovado e Isla Magdalena.
Junto con ello, se reclasificarán cuatro reservas nacionales como parques nacionales, creando el Parque Nacional Alacalufes y el Parque Nacional Cerro Castillo, y añadiendo las reservas nacionales Lago Cochrane y Lago Jeinimeni al nuevo Parque Nacional Patagonia.
Todo esto formará parte de los 17 parques que se articularán en la red, cubriendo una superficie mayor que Suiza.
Yvon Chouinard, fundador de la compañía de ropa outdoor Patagonia, dijo al diario británico The Guardian que Chile está ahora entre los países con el mayor porcentaje de tierras protegidas del mundo. “Eso pone a Chile ahí arriba con Costa Rica en términos del porcentaje de tierras protegidas”, dijo, agregando que los parques donados por Tompkins Conservation “son parques ya listos para los turistas, con senderos, cabañas e infraestructura”.
