Photographing Chilean Nature
Fotografiando la naturaleza de Chile
Istill remember when I was just a child and spent hours observing nature, I felt - and still feel - a special attraction and motivation toward her. That passion was so great that it impelled me to study biology at Chile's Catholic University: I wanted to learn more about it, how it worked and interacted. This interest soon led me to want to interpret nature through images, and an old Mamiya camera, which my father gave me, accompanied me when I started. But as I entered the world of science, my desire to travel and photograph the immense natural heritage of Chile only increased, to the point that in 2002 I quit my studies for a doctorate in ecology to dedicate myself full-time to nature photography. From then on, I understood that my mission
as a biologist and photographer was to show, educate, and raise awareness about the value of conserving biodiversity and the natural areas that still remain on the planet.
I started as a photographer shooting descriptive images, registering species or places through the lens, without paying much attention to the more technical aspects. That was the way it was for me for many years until I understood that photography was more than that, and I managed to decipher the codes and logic of a rich language, which has a penetrative power much greater than words, as well as transversal and universal. I saw in photography a way of expressing concepts and events, but above all emotions, which are ultimately what most affect human beings. In the creation of an image there must be a fundamental emotional process so that the message is transmitted with as much strength as possible. Today I seek to photograph nature for what it is, but also for what “it also is,” attempting to generate an emotional connection with the public. I believe that in this way my message about conservation becomes more relevant and valid over time.
Nature photography has allowed me to visit a large part of the Chilean territory, taking me to remote places where few have set foot, such as the austral fjords of Tierra del Fuego or the extensive high plains of the Altiplano. But I have also concentrated on nature that is closer to the cities, which surrounds us day by day. There lies the key to a good photograph: to have the ability to see beauty in everyday life, in what we have in front of our nose, but that we do not usually perceive because we do not take the time to stop, pause and contemplate our surroundings. a fotografía de la naturaleza.
