OSORNO PROVINCE / LA PROVINCIA DE OSORNO

Osorno is the northernmost province of Chile’s Los Lagos Region, roughly located between the cities of Valdivia and Puerto Montt. It takes up the full width of Chile, from the Andes mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and is administratively divided into seven “comunas”: Puyehue, Puerto Octay, Osorno, Rio Negro, Purranque, San Juan de la Costa and San Pablo. In the center of the province is Osorno, a city which has been founded twice; in 1558, but then destroyed by the mapuche, and then again in 1796. From Santiago, it is 928 km on the Route 5 Southern Highway, and from Argentina by the International Cardenal Samoré Pass it is 240 km to Bariloche. The most populated and productive area is the central plain, which is home to rural families, small producers and big industrial farms. Huilliche families (in Mapudungun, “people of the south”), make up an important part of the territory where nature and culture are integral and live as one. Osorno es la provincia más septentrional de la X Región de Los Lagos, ubicada entre Valdivia y Puerto Montt. Ocupa el ancho de Chile, desde la Cordillera de los Andes hasta el Océano Pacífico, y está dividida administrativamente en siete comunas: Puyehue, Puerto Octay, Osorno, Río Negro, Purranque, San Juan de la Costa y San Pablo. Al centro de la provincia se encuentra la ciudad de Osorno, que ha sido fundada dos veces; la primera en 1558, que fue destruida por los mapuche, y luego en 1796. Desde Santiago son 928 km. por la Autopista 5 Sur, y desde Argentina por el Paso Internacional Cardenal Samoré son 240 km. hasta Bariloche. El área más poblada y productiva es la llanura central, que acoge a familias rurales, pequeños productores y grandes fundos. En estas tierras habitan familias huilliches (en mapudungún, “gente del sur”), conformando un importante territorio donde naturaleza y cultura son parte integral e indivisible.
