THEMED ‘ THE LOST MINES’, THE inaugural one-day multi sport Sarawak Adventure Challenge was held on October 14 in and around the Fairy Cave, a colossal natural chamber near Bau, Sarawak. Fifty-two teams had signed up to test their mettle over the trails and hills – and through the ‘mines’. The majority came from outside Sarawak with competitors from Singapore, Brunei, West Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, South Africa and New Zealand. They lined up at the start for a rugged course that included 46km of mountain biking, a cave section and a final 13-km trail run. This year’s Men’s category was won by Team Sasa (Shahrom bin Abdullah and Shahril bin Amir) from West Malaysia, who finished the course in 4 hours and 20 minutes and received the grand prize of RM6,000. Following the victors home were runner-ups Team Sukan Lasak ATM B Melaka and the Armed Forces Team A, both also from West Malaysia. In the Mixed team category, the Toakas Racing Team (Nur Assyria binti Zainal Abidin and Mohd Syahkirin bin Ibrahim) took the honours ahead of Kamikaze Adventure Team, with the Eco Adventure Team from Sarawak third. Planning for the 2018 event will begin soon and the event organiser, Draco Action Sports, promises that next year’s event will continue to provide competitors a challenge that highlights Sarawak’s landscape and attractions.
