Splashing about the south
CLAIMED TO BE THE FIRST RECREATIONAL sailing itinerary to visit the south coast, G Adventures’ Sailing Sri Lanka South Coast tour merges land excursions with water activities. The 16m (53ft) sailing catamaran – launched in 2018 with four double/twin cabins with en-suite bathrooms and pop-up skylights – will take up to eight guests on a journey to multiple cities along the coast. The southern port of Mirissa is the start and end point, with Weligama Bay, Galle, Kudawella, Kalametiya and Talalla Beach all on the itinerary. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and whales – maybe even a blue whale if you are lucky – along the way, as you drop in on different beaches to swim, surf, stand-up paddle board and kayak. Especially worth a visit is the 16th-century fort in Galle, which was built by the Portuguese and later occupied by the Dutch. The ramparts are still standing even after the 2004 tsunami that did so much damage on this coast – some of which remains visible today. One of the G Adventure’s Chief Experience Officers will accompany guests to offer cultural knowledge and recommendations during the seven-day trip. Meals are prepared by the on-board cook to serve appetites sharpened by active days in and on the water. To hop aboard this sailing adventure, you must be a minimum of 16 years old.
