Guy goes like the wind

19-YEAR OLD GUY BRIDGE (SHOWN RIGHT) from Devon, UK, set a new record at the Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton kiteboard race, beating the previous record set in 2016 by 45 seconds. He was the clear frontrunner among 135 starters within the first five minutes of the 19km crossing. He then grew his lead riding across the strait from Rottnest Island to Fremantle in just 18 minutes and 49 seconds on his hydrofoil board. The skies were clear and blue, the winds a solid 20kn, and, there was, “no seaweed or too much swell so it was really perfect”, said Guy. “I went a lot faster than last year, it’s pretty incredible to have managed to get the extra distance ahead in the race to beat the record.” First woman across the line was Rachael Hughes, a New Zealander living in Safety Bay in Western Australia. “It was a great race, really fun. I wasn’t expecting to win. It’s always a toss-up which kite you’re going to race with so there is some luck involved too. The wind was pretty good the whole way across, I got in the shadow of one of the ships out there for a bit but then was ok the rest of the race.”
