EVENTS TO COM­MEM­O­RATE SOVIET AU­THOR CHYNGYZ AITMATOV

Re­cently, a week-long photo ex­hi­bi­tion was held at the Ren­min Uni­ver­sity of China (RUC) Li­brary to com­mem­o­rate the 90th an­niver­sary of the birth of Soviet and Kyr­gyz au­thor Chyngyz Aitmatov (1928–2008). Pres­i­dent of the School of Lib­eral Arts at RUC, Liang Kun, as well as diplomats from the Em­bassy of the Kyr­gyz Repub­lic in China at­tended the ex­hi­bi­tion's open­ing cer­e­mony, which also at­tracted many mem­bers of teach­ing staff and stu­dents.

Chyngyz Aitmatov was born on De­cem­ber 12, 1928 and be­gan writ­ing in the 1950s. Sev­eral of his works are recog­nised as clas­sics of the 20th cen­tury and have played an im­por­tant role in pro­mot­ing the de­vel­op­ment of Kyr­gyz cul­ture, lit­er­a­ture and arts. His books have been trans­lated into 176 lan­guages and are pop­u­lar with read­ers across the globe. The Kyr­gyz Repub­lic held events at home and abroad to com­mem­o­rate the 90th an­niver­sary of his birth, with the photo ex­hi­bi­tion at RUC help­ing vis­i­tors learn more about the au­thor's life and works.

Other com­mem­o­ra­tive events were or­gan­ised at the uni­ver­sity as well as a Kyr­gyz Film Week at the China Film Ar­chive and an in­ter­na­tional sem­i­nar com­mem­o­rat­ing the 90th an­niver­sary of Aitmatov's birth at the School of Chi­nese Clas­sics. Over 100 politi­cians and ex­perts par­tic­i­pated in the sem­i­nar, dur­ing which newly pub­lished books about the writer were also re­leased.
