EVENTS TO COMMEMORATE SOVIET AUTHOR CHYNGYZ AITMATOV
Recently, a week-long photo exhibition was held at the Renmin University of China (RUC) Library to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of Soviet and Kyrgyz author Chyngyz Aitmatov (1928–2008). President of the School of Liberal Arts at RUC, Liang Kun, as well as diplomats from the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in China attended the exhibition's opening ceremony, which also attracted many members of teaching staff and students.
Chyngyz Aitmatov was born on December 12, 1928 and began writing in the 1950s. Several of his works are recognised as classics of the 20th century and have played an important role in promoting the development of Kyrgyz culture, literature and arts. His books have been translated into 176 languages and are popular with readers across the globe. The Kyrgyz Republic held events at home and abroad to commemorate the 90th anniversary of his birth, with the photo exhibition at RUC helping visitors learn more about the author's life and works.
Other commemorative events were organised at the university as well as a Kyrgyz Film Week at the China Film Archive and an international seminar commemorating the 90th anniversary of Aitmatov's birth at the School of Chinese Classics. Over 100 politicians and experts participated in the seminar, during which newly published books about the writer were also released.
