Pupils make lotus banquet
On June 6 Moshuihu Primary School in Hanyang District organized a culinary competition with lotus as the main ingredient. Pupils competed to show off their cooking skills. All 19 classrooms in the school were turned into "kitchens." The pupils selected lotus flowers, leaves, seedpods, and roots as their main ingredients to make hot dishes on the spot. They could also bring halffinished desserts and cold dishes prepared at home and finish them in the classroom. After all the dishes were finished, the pupils introduced their dishes with pictures and poems. The judges selected as winners the most delicious dishes, those that were the most relevant to the lotus theme, and dishes with the most artistic introduction. The young chefs put together some very interesting dishes, such as hot and spicy crayfish, deep-fried lotus root stuffed with eggplant, sauteed lotus sprout and shrimp, steamed lotus root stuffed with sweet osmanthus honey and glutinous rice, and white fungus and lotus seed soup.
