Fan Xiaoquan, a 63-year-old security guard at the Central China Book Trading Center, settled in Wuhan with his daughter after retiring from his job as a Chinese teacher at Sugang Middle School in Haokou Town, Qianjiang City. While working, he noticed that three or four foreigners a month would come to purchase books. He decided to learn English to communicate with those customers.

For more than two years, Fan has been learning English with his grandson and often consults English teachers from the school where he once worked through communication apps. Now, he can fluently communicate with his foreign customers in American English. Many foreigners who work nearby have become friends with him, and they ask for help with translation and learn Chinese from him.
