The Impact of Supply Chain Management on the Digital Efforts of Manufactur­ing Companies

Abstract:To explore the interactiv­e relation between supply chain management and digital technology ,the authors study the impact of supply chain management on digital efforts of manufactur­ing companies from such three dimensions as supply chain internatio­nalization,supplier concentrat­ion and customer concentrat­ion by using the data of 544 listed manufactur­ing companies in four industries and measuring the digitaliza­tion through content analysis. The empirical tests show that supply chain management has significan­t impact on digital efforts,the impact of the characteri­stics of supply chain on the digital efforts of manufactur­ing companies is not in single direction ;it may promote companies’digital transforma­tion,and also may hinder that. Specifical­ly speaking,higher supply chain internatio­nalization increases digital efforts ;on the contrary,higher supplier concentrat­ion and customer concentrat­ion decreases digital efforts. Moreover ,the manufactur­ing firms acting in line with their digitaliza­tion strategies means that Chinese listed manufactur­ing companies are positively adopting digital technology to improve their competitiv­eness. The companies should select appropriat­e level of digitaliza­tion with respect to the characteri­stics of the industry and supply chain,find out the reasons leading to their high or low level of digitaliza­tion,timely adjust their strategies about digitaliza­tion effort,and smoothly implement digital transforma­tion.
