Ding edges Xiao to qual­ify for last 16

Chi­nese No 1 Ding Jun­hui beat com­pa­triot Xiao Guodong 6-4 to reach the last 16 at the UK Cham­pi­onship in York on Tues­day.

Ding, ranked eighth in the world, will next take on Eng­land’s Martin O’Donnell, who is ranked 59th.

“I started well and then I strug­gled a bit,” said Ding. “Once I got to 5-4 I had to go for it. I feel I am play­ing bet­ter with each match.”

In ear­lier ac­tion, Hong Kong’s Marco Fu lost 6-3 to Eng­land’s Jack Lisowski, and for­mer world No 1 Judd Trump set up a clash with Joe Perry by beat­ing Mark King 6-2 with a top break of 100.

Aus­tralia’s Neil Robert­son edged out Scot­land’s Graeme Dott 6-5 in a match be­tween two for­mer world cham­pi­ons.
