Yangshan Village, once Shangri La in real world

- By DAISY XIA daisyxia@chinadailyhk.com

The Shangri La described in ancient poet Tao Qian’s (AD 365-427) famous prose “The Peach Blossom Land” did exit – Yangshan Village in Guiyang county, Chenzhou of Hunan province, was one.

Surrounded by green mountains in three sides and a creek flowing through, the village was first built some 600 years ago in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Today, about 60 houses in the village are still intact, linked by narrow stone-paved allies.

The biggest difference between Yangshan Village and other ancient villages in China is that it was not built by rich businessmen or an official’s family. Local residents strictly followed Confucius teachings and gave great respect to intellectuals. “Living in harmony” was the core belief of local customs.

For hundreds of years, the village kept the tradition of self-rule. There were various clubs responsible for keeping the clan’s traditions, advocating education, relieving poverty, removing bias against women or redressing unhealthy behaviors. Crime rate was extremely low here. Villagers even didn’t need to close their door at night.

Today people can take a walk around the village to appreciate the ancient architectures and learn about interesting local customs. Above all, it was the real Shangri La that once existed in the real world. The modern society can never provide such a tranquil and harmonious atmosphere any more.
