Vice-premier pays tribute to philanthro­pist

Han praises Tin Ka-ping’s devotion to country, contributi­on to public welfare

Vice-Premier Han Zheng paid tribute to renowned Hong Kong philanthro­pist Tin Kaping and sent a wreath to Tin’s family to extend his deep condolence­s.

Tin, a renowned philanthro­pist and prominent industrial­ist, passed away in the city at the age of 99 on July 10. He was born on Nov 20, 1919.

Han — a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China — expressed his respect for Tin’s lifelong love for the country and for Hong Kong, and his enthusiasm for public welfare.

Tin devoted himself to industrial developmen­t and made great contributi­ons to promoting education in the country, the vice-premier said.

The endeavors Tin initiated will continue and his philanthro­pic spirit will live forever and benefit future generation­s, Han said in his message of condolence­s.

His message was delivered to Tin’s family by officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administra­tive Region on Tuesday.

Joining Han, Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan also sent a wreath and paid her respects to Tin.

in 1958. He was successful in the chemicals business in his early days and later made a fortune in real estate. He devoted his life to promoting the developmen­t of charities, donating 80 percent of his total assets to different fields, especially education.

So far, the charity foundation Tin set up in 1982 has funded 318 education institutio­ns, more than 1,800 rural libraries, 29 hospitals and about 130 bridges and roads across 34 provinces, municipali­ties, autonomous regions and SARs in China.
