Chen Xi, a senior official of the Communist Party of China, encouraged scholars and experts on Saturday to help strengthen the country’s independence in key technology fields, and pledged to create a good environment for them.

Chen, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the committee’s Organization Department, said specialists from various fields should translate their love for their motherland into momentum for innovation and apply their research results toward the country’s development.

The remarks were made to scholars and experts gathered at the Beidaihe beach resort in Qinhuangdao, Hebei province. He also held a symposium to learn their opinions and gather suggestions.

It has become a tradition since the first gathering in 1987 for the central leadership to invite China’s top talent to Beidaihe for a holiday.

Chen said senior specialists should teach the young by example and that the older generation should recommend young talent to the country, in an effort to boost technological development.

Personnel departments should continue to improve the mechanisms for training, rating and incentives, and make efforts to create an environment attractive to talented people in various fields, he said.

Sixty-two scholars and experts attended the event at Beidaihe this year, including academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.

In the summer of 1987, the central leadership first invited specialists who had made contributions in their fields to the summer resort for a holiday. The event has been held regularly since 2001, when China began to regard talent as a strategic resource.

According to Xinhua News Agency, more than 1,000 experts have been invited in 18 groupings.

An unnamed official in the CPC Central Committee Organization Department told Xinhua that the move aims to help experts escape their busy work routines and enjoy some quality time with their families.
