Veteran politician Lau dies at 71
Member of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Basic Law Committee Lau Nai-keung died in Hong Kong on Wednesday evening, aged 71.
He died from cancer, according to sources.
Born in 1947, Lau was a politician, businessman and academic.
He had served as a member of the Basic Law Consultative Committee since 2007. He was also a member of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He was appointed as the committee member of the 2005 Chief Executive Election Committee.
In 1983,
Lau founded a leading political organization of the day — Meeting Point — in Hong Kong.
As a veteran current affairs commentator, Lau wrote numerous commentaries for local media outlets, including China Daily. Lau had been writing for China Daily for more than a decade since the paper launched its Hong Kong Edition in 1997. In his pieces, Lau strongly argued for Hong Kong’s integration into the national development. Lau was also the chairman of Long View Cultural Services. In 2016, Lau once passed out when Zhang Dejiang, former chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, visited Hong Kong and addressed about 200 delegates from the city’s different sectors, triggering concerns over his health.
