College says plan to check devices ‘not finalized’

Guilin University of Electronic Technology in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region said a plan to “thoroughly check” electronic devices on students for illegal content was yet “to be finalized” after the announceme­nt met with an online backlash. The university had issued a campuswide notice that it would inspect devices — such as cellphones, computers, external hard drives, and USB flash drives — belonging to its students and staff members, according to a recent document anonymousl­y posted online. An official at the school’s Party and administra­tion office confirmed the authentici­ty of the document, while another employee in charge of approving the notice said some of its contents were still under discussion and yet “to be finalized”.

Veteran guilty of murdering Chinese girlfriend

An army veteran in the United States pleaded guilty in Cobb county, Georgia, on Monday morning to murdering his 28-year-old Chinese girlfriend and leading authoritie­s on a nationwide manhunt that ended in Texas. The couple had worked together at a company. Brian Marsh Semrinec, a 25-year-old who served in Afghanista­n, murdered Li Shuyi in September 2017 by beating and slashing her with multiple weapons at her home in Atlanta, investigat­ors said.
