Family on the Go 3, the third TV series depicting entrepreneurship and how Chinese people started businesses overseas, is being filmed in Barcelona, Spain, and is expected to hit the small screen soon.

The episode, shot by Wenzhou Broadcasting and Television Media Group, describes how second-generation overseas entrepreneurs explore business opportunities related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the e-commerce gold rush, and how they return to China in search of bigger success.

Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, is home to more than 688,900 Chinese who run businesses in more than 130 countries and regions. Among those, 380,000 reside in countries or regions involved in the BRI.

“Wenzhou is the epitome of today’s China, and we hope to unfold the tremendous achievements China has made over 40 years of reform and opening-up through this TV series,” said Hu Jianjin, Wenzhou’s publicity chief.

Family on the Go 1 (also called The Legend of Entrepreneurship), was aired on China Central Television in 2012.

The drama begins during the era of China’s reform and opening-up in the 1980s in Wenzhou and charts the progress of a family headed by Zhou Wanshun, who lived in Rui’an, a small county in Wenzhou. The family had the opportunity for one of their two children to go to Italy to study. Zhou chose to let his 13-year-old daughter go abroad rather than his 16-year-old son. He then set out with his wife and son to Wenzhou to make their fortune in their own way. After challenges and hardships, both the son and daughter achieved success.

Since its debut, the TV series has been translated into multiple languages and broadcast in countries such as France, South Korea, Panama and Kazakhstan.

In June 2017, President Xi Jinping mentioned the series in a signed article in Kazakhstan’s newspaper Aikyn Gazeti ahead of his state visit to the country.

Su Zhou, director for Family on the Go 3, said: “Through this TV series I want to weave today’s China into a powerhouse in the postindustrial era, further advancing in high-tech areas such as the smart internet.”
