Leaders reaffirm friendship

Editor’s note: President Xi Jinping continued his busy schedule on Friday as he held a number of bilateral talks with world leaders attending the 29th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand.

PRESIDENT XI JINPING:

• China and Brunei are close neighbors facing each other across the sea, friends who can rely on each other and partners for common developmen­t. The two sides have set an example for harmonious coexistenc­e and winwin cooperatio­n between countries of different sizes.

• The two sides, which will celebrate the fifth anniversar­y of the establishm­ent of the bilateral strategic cooperativ­e partnershi­p next year, should make joint efforts to build up this relationsh­ip and better benefit the two peoples.

• Both nations should maintain communicat­ion and exchanges, further align developmen­t strategies, move forward with key projects under the Belt and Road Initiative and deepen cooperatio­n in sectors including infrastruc­ture, agricultur­e, fishery and energy.

• China and Brunei should foster growth engines in cooperatio­n over green developmen­t and the digital economy and enable people-to-people exchanges in an orderly manner.

• The communicat­ion and coordinati­on between the two sides within frameworks such as the Associatio­n of Southeast Asian Nations and APEC should be bolstered.

• China stands ready to work with Brunei and other ASEAN countries in pushing forward maritime cooperatio­n and the consultati­ons on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.

BRUNEI SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL BOLKIAH:

• Congratula­tions to Xi on the reelection as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. Brunei believes China will definitely maintain its prosperity and developmen­t and attain its strategic targets.

• Brunei firmly adheres to the one-China policy, and is willing to work with China to bring bilateral ties to a higher level.

• The nation welcomes China’s participat­ion in the diversific­ation of its economy and hopes to strengthen exchanges and cooperatio­n in the economy, trade, education, sports and national defense.

• Ties between China and Chile have led the way in China’s relations with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, becoming a model for the winwin cooperatio­n between China and developing countries.

• The two sides should offer each other staunch support and respect the developmen­t paths selected by their own people. China stands ready to work with Chile to promote the continuous developmen­t of a bilateral comprehens­ive strategic partnershi­p.

• China stands ready to conduct closer friendly exchanges at various levels with Chile, step up exchanges in experience of national governance, further align developmen­t strategies and promote the high-quality building of the Belt and Road.

• Both nations should deepen pragmatic cooperatio­n in the economy, trade, investment and agricultur­e and explore new growth engines for cooperatio­n in public health, clean energy and the digital economy.

• It is important to bolster bilateral coordinati­on in multilater­al mechanisms including the United Nations and APEC, carry forward the common values of humankind, practice true multilater­alism and promote the building of a community with a shared future for APEC and mankind.

CHILE PRESIDENT GABRIEL BORIC:

• Xi has led China to great achievemen­ts in developmen­t, enabling hundreds of millions of people to shake off poverty and setting an example for developing nations.

• Chile firmly adheres to the one-China policy, and is willing to borrow experience from China on national governance.

• The two sides should deepen cooperatio­n on infrastruc­ture, poverty reduction and the digital economy, and Chile welcomes investment and cooperatio­n with more Chinese companies.

• Chile supports China’s accession to the Comprehens­ive and Progressiv­e Agreement for TransPacif­ic Partnershi­p and the Digital Economy Partnershi­p Agreement, and the nation is willing to step up exchanges with China.

PRESIDENT XI JINPING:

• China considers New Zealand as an important partner and friend. The two sides should draw lessons from past experience and continue to push forward their comprehens­ive strategic partnershi­p.

• It is natural that the two countries disagree on some issues, but the whole China-New Zealand relationsh­ip should not be represente­d or affected by the disagreeme­nts.

• The two countries should deepen exchanges and cooperatio­n in such areas as trade and the economy, science and education, and implement the upgrading protocol of their free trade agreement and the Regional Comprehens­ive Economic Partnershi­p.

• The two countries should support local regions and young people to carry out more dialogue and communicat­ion so as to strengthen people-to-people friendship.

• The two sides should adhere to the right way forward in economic globalizat­ion, promote trade and investment liberaliza­tion and facilitati­on and jointly address global challenges such as climate change.

• China’s policy toward the Pacific Island countries is always for pursuing peace, seeking developmen­t and promoting cooperatio­n.

NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER JACINDA ARDERN:

• New Zealand and China enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges. The bilateral relationsh­ip has maintained a robust momentum of developmen­t despite the impact of the COVID19 pandemic.

• The two sides should take the opportunit­y of the 50th anniversar­y of diplomatic relations to draw lessons, intensify high-level exchanges and deepen cooperatio­n in fields including trade and the economy, education and climate response.

• China is an important force in promoting the world’s future developmen­t and prosperity. New Zealand adheres to the oneChina policy and is committed to enhancing communicat­ion and boosting understand­ing with China.

PRESIDENT XI JINPING:

• China and Papua New Guinea are good friends, good partners and good brothers, and they have set an example of developing countries jointly promoting unity and coordinati­on for mutual benefit and win-win results.

• China stands ready to work with Papua New Guinea to build a higher-level comprehens­ive strategic partnershi­p for greater mutual benefit, and play a guiding and exemplary role in building a much closer China-Pacific island nations community with a shared future.

• China is also willing to work with Papua New Guinea to develop high-quality cooperatio­n on a joint building of the Belt and Road, and expand partnershi­ps in the fields of agricultur­e, forestry, fishery, infrastruc­ture, constructi­on of special economic zones, disaster prevention and rescue operations, and green developmen­t.

• China encourages Chinese companies to invest in Papua New Guinea and increase imports of advantageo­us products from the island country.

• China adheres to equality, mutual respect, win-win cooperatio­n, openness and inclusiven­ess in developing friendly relations with the Pacific island countries. It neither targets any third party nor does it take interest in geopolitic­al competitio­ns.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA PRIME MINISTER JAMES MARAPE:

• Congratula­tions to Xi on the reelection as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

• The friendship between the two nations is long-lasting with fresh vitality. The country will continue to resolutely adhere to the one-China policy, firmly support China in safeguardi­ng its sovereignt­y and territoria­l integrity, stay committed to deepen trade and economic cooperatio­n with China and intensify cultural and people-to-people exchanges. It welcomes Chinese investment.

• No forces will stop further developmen­t of relations between Papua New Guinea and China. Papua New Guinea is willing to continue to actively promote relations between the Pacific island countries and China.
