CDHK wins gold, silver at journalism awards

- By CAI JING

China Daily Hong Kong Edition reporters clinched top honors in business technology reporting at the annual business news awards hosted by Hang Seng University of Hong Kong on Thursday.

The HSUHK’s 8th Business Journalism Awards competition, with over 30 entries, recognizes outstanding reporting on business, economic, and financial issues. Since the award’s establishment in 2017, CDHK Edition has bagged 10 awards in various categories.

Oswald Chan Wai-kit, a senior business reporter with over 20 years’ experience, won the gold award for the Best Business Technology News Reporting (Text) category for his April 2023 feature, I&T Awaits Reboot After HK$130 Billion Over Six Years.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Chan said, “This article can provide a slight contribution, whereas the relevant community stakeholders and the government can sit together to discuss and take action in the third economic transformation in Hong Kong.”

Chan’s story highlighted the need for Hong Kong’s innovation and technology value chain to reset its focus on talent, applied research, land for innovation manufacturing, and complementary integration with the Chinese mainland’s digital hubs, such as Shenzhen in Guangdong province.

Zhang Tianyuan, a senior business reporter, secured the silver award in the Best Business Technology News Reporting (Text) category for her May 2023 feature, ChatGPT: Smart Chatbot or Rogue Machine Power? The article illuminated the opportunities for China’s tech firms to employ niche strategies in developing generative artificial intelligence amid the global race to embrace the technology, while also highlighting the potential challenges posed by chip restrictions.

Zhang’s piece also raised questions about the need for AI regulations as technology advances and becomes more widely adopted.

President of HSUHK Simon Ho Shun-man said, “The significance of business news in society cannot be understated, as it not only provides vital business information and market dynamics but also propels economic development and social progress.”
