Senators swap Phaneuf to Kings

-

The Los Angeles Kings acquired veteran defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.

Phaneuf and forward Nate Thompson were dealt to Los Angeles in exchange for forwards Marian Gaborik and Nick Shore.

The teams announced the trade after the Senators’ 6-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The deal gives the Kings more depth on the blueline as they assume the final three-plus years of Phaneuf’s contract, though the Senators are retaining 25 percent of his salary and salary-cap hit.

The 32-year-old Phaneuf, who was drafted ninth overall by the Calgary Flames in 2003 and is a former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has 16 points in 52 games this season and 478 in 954 games during his 13-year NHL career.
