863 Program Implemented

China launched the State High-tech Development Plan (863 Program) in March 1986 in hopes of improving the country’s ability to innovate. Many technological achievements including Super Hybrid Rice with an average yield of 760 kilograms per

mu (equal to 0.067 hectares), genetically modified cotton resistant to pests, and a home- built super server with world- leading functions have benefited from the program.
