The Big Role of Little Potatoes

-

With the continuous spread of COVID-19 around the world, some major food exporting countries have announced a halt or restriction on food exports to ensure their own food security.

As the world’s largest grain importer, China must figure out how to increase its own food production in the future.

Some experts have suggested that the country increase production by 100 million tons of grain over the next 20 years to meet the needs of its growing population. China ranks first in potato planting area and output in the world. Potatoes, as one of China’s four staple crops (rice, wheat, corn, and potatoes), will play an important role in ensuring the country’s food security.
