Shaanxi Grottoes

Shaanxi has been deeply influenced by Buddhist culture in history, as evidenced by the plethora of Buddhist statues in local grottoes.

The grottoes in Shaanxi Province are newer and far less famous than the Mogao Grottoes in Gansu Province and the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province. However, the Shaanxi grottoes remain renowned for quantity.

Deep in the Loess Plateau of northern Shaanxi is a unique Buddhist relic— Zhongshan Grottoes, which has been hailed as China’s most magnificent Buddhist building. The grottoes feature countless exquisite Buddhist statues in various shapes.
