Gyangze Tibetan Carpet

-

Since ancient times, Gyangze has been an important trading center and cultural hub in Tibet. The rich commercial and cultural heritage of the ancient city has helped Tibetan carpet-weaving handicraft stand out. Exquisite and sophisticated Gyangze Tibetan carpets were sent as tributes to the court and served as important export commodities during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Thanks to their high practical and artistic value, Tibetan tapestries are well-known abroad alongside Persian silk rugs and Turkish carpets.

Emergence of local cultural phenomena is usually closely related to the geographical environment, and Tibetan carpets are no exception. The climate on the Qinghai-tibet Plateau is very cold. Tibetan carpets developed from primitive woolen weaving have remained daily necessities for Tibetan people since the nomadic era due to their effectiveness in retaining heat.
