In 2015, the United Nations urged all countries to adopt the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to transform the world in the following 15 years and help all people to live dignified lives. The agenda’s priority is to eradicate poverty in all forms, including extreme poverty.

According to the UN Sustainable Development Goals Report 2017, about 767 million people worldwide remained destitute in 2013, living on $1.9 or less a day. Half of the world’s poor live in Sub-saharan Africa, where 42 percent of the region’s population subsist in conditions of extreme poverty.
