SPSS19.0 statistical software was used, and data mining was carried out by using statistical methods such as frequency analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis. Results Totally 247 medical cases and 328 times of visits were included, and 91 times of visits without using Chinese materia medica were excluded, so finally 237 prescriptions were included, involving 75 kinds of Chinese materia medica and the total medication frequency was 3071. The first five high-frequency Chinese materia medica were Cuscutae Semen (236 times), Mori Fructus (236 times), Rubi Fructus (226 times), Epimedii Folium (208 times) and Morindae Officinalis Radix (198 times). The properties of high-frequency Chinese materia medica were mainly to be flat and warm, sweet and bitter. The high-frequency Chinese materia medica were mainly for liver and kidney meridians, most of them were tonifying medicines (tonifying yang medicine, tonifying yin medicine and tonifying qi medicine). Nine common factors were found through data mining, which showed the characteristics of invigorating kidney-yang, tonifying spleen and replenishing qi, invigorating qi and blood, etc. Cluster analysis found a basic prescription which called Wuzi Yanzong Pills. Conclusion The therapeutic principle of Prof. CUI in treating asthenospermia with kidney essence deficiency type is replenishing kidney essence, using astringent medicine and heat-clearing medicine
