SANJAY SURANA Wrote “Kampot on the Cusp,” p. 108

-

During his weeklong sojourn in southern Cambodia, Surana found himself quietly lulled by the region’s charms. “Kampot reminded me a little of Luang Prabang with its colonial buildings, the river, its easy-going tempo, and the great variety of places to eat,” he says. “The town’s historic core is easy to explore on foot, while the proximity of Mount Bokor and the sea at Kep adds to its draw as a destination.” A former editor at Condé Nast Traveler, the Singapore-based freelance writer looks forward to returning to Kampot, though wonders how it will change should the planned developments materialize. “When I think of Kampot, I see a tranquil town that’s stayed off the mainstream tourism radar. It’s hard to picture the grid of streets in the old town teeming with visitors.”
