Leave it to The Fullerton Hotels & Resorts to breathe new life into one of Sydney’s most cherished heritage structures. Built in the late 19th century, the General Post O ce (GPO) at Martin Place is considered the nest example of the Victorian Italian Renaissance style in New South Wales. The GPO served as the headquarters of Australia Post until 1996, when it was privatized and converted for use as part of the Westin Sydney, which included a modern high-rise section. Now, it’s being readied for its transformation into The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, with the o cial handover slated for October. Given that the group’s agship property —The Fullerton Hotel Singapore—is also a heritage-listed former post o ce building, one can’t imagine better custodians. A cleaning of the GPO’s sandstone facade is already underway, while guests checking into one of the rebranded hotel’s 416 elegant rooms and suites will be able to enjoy heritage walking tours that reveal the building’s origins and its connection to the history of the surrounding Central Business District.
