THAT FIFTIES FEELING
Mid-century modernism has been catching on in Bali as of late, with an increasing number of villas, beach clubs, and restaurants all taking design inspiration from the movement. The latest example? A pair of newly minted drinking and dining venues at the beachfront Alila Seminyak ( alilahotels.com) resort. Retro Californian vibes predominate in Flat Stanley, where clean lines and warm colors offset with plants and curios—think vintage radios, rotary phones, and a film projector—set the scene for a menu headlined by sourdough flatbread pizzas. Taking up the adjoining 1950s Palm Springs–themed space is The Pontiac Stardust, an offshoot of a Hong Kong drinking den that has been a fixture on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list since the awards began in 2016. Don’t miss creative cocktails such as the pandan-infused Daiquiri Slushy and the Last Resort & Spa, a blend of maraschino, dry vermouth, and Bali’s own Nusa Caña rum.
