PRIMATE TIME

- —David Tse

Rwanda is Africa’s most talked-about safari destination these days, and that’s not all down to its mountain gorillas. Smart lodges have been making inroads into the country of late, with major brands like Wilderness Safaris and Dubai-based One&Only giving a jump-start to the fledgling luxury tourism scene. The latest high-profile opening is Singita Kwitonda Lodge ( singita.com; doubles from US$1,495 per person, all-inclusive), set on 72 hectares at the edge of Volcanoes National Park. Featuring hand-fired terra-cotta brickwork, volcanic-stone walls, and picture windows that frame the peaks of the Virunga Mountains, the eco-luxe property’s eight suites and adjacent four-bedroom villa provide a sophisticated take on safari style as well as easy access to gorilla trekking and other nature-based activities. Mind you, the permit for those gorilla treks will cost you another US$1,500 per person, but if spotting Rwanda’s great apes is on your bucket list, this should be your home base.
