THE RESIDENCE BINTAN

-

Singapore-based Cenizaro Hotels & Resorts turned heads in early 2018 when it opened its first Indonesian outpost on the island of Bintan, a mere 55-minute catamaran ferry ride across the water from the brand’s home city. Situated on the less-trammeled southeastern coastline of the island, The Residence Bintan makes for a quieter alternative to the resorts dotting the popular north shore. Holidaymakers who embark on the scenic hourlong transfer from the ferry terminal will be rewarded with barefoot luxury and a true sense of seclusion.

Here, traditional Indonesian touches grace the 127 cleanlined rooms, suites, and villas. These comprise 80 onebedroom Vista and Garden Terraces, which feature either a ground-floor patio or an expansive balcony; 22 beachfront villas and 15 Deluxe Sea View villas, all with their own private pool; and a quartet of twobedroom villas that offer even more space and direct access to the beach. Many of the accommodations also come with plush four-poster king beds.

After spending hours stretched out on a sun lounger by the infinity pool or at the resort’s private beach, guests at The Residence Bintan can look forward to authentic Indonesian dishes and pan-asian favorites at signature restaurant Rica Rica. Not far away, the Dining Room serves international cuisine and satisfying buffet breakfasts, while Pool Bar has a menu of refreshing drinks and light bites such as pomelo salad. Elevated dining experiences include a barbecue dinner near the beach and a private meal on a wooden deck perched just above the waves.

The healing properties of native ingredients are harnessed at the spa, whose treatments blend modern techniques with ancient knowhow. Then there’s Earth Basket, an on-site organic farm where gardeners grow more than 30 kinds of herbs and vegetables. Another hit with younger guests is Kakatu Kids Club, thanks to its range of fun-filled activities. Keen to get out on the water? Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available, and you can book snorkeling and diving excursions as well as castaway picnics on the nearby isle of Pulau Mapur.
