“I had a bit of alcohol and met a fellow villager driving a truck. He told me he was going to load some things.” So said a man surnamed Chen, recalling a night 15 years ago when Chen and another 20 or so fellow villagers stole over 4,000 meters of cable valued at 61,320 yuan from a company in Changping district, injuring two employees during their heist. Chen was paid 1,000 yuan for his help. While Chen’s accomplices were all eventually caught, Chen fled from home and had been hiding for the past 15 years until his adult son finally persuaded him to confess his crime to police. The procurator suggested a 10-year prison sentence; the court has yet to make its decision.
