Katharina Grosse: Mumbling Mud
Mumbling Mud, an impressive 1,500-square-meter exhibition by German artist Katharina Grosse, features five immersive installations. Grosse is known for her use of the spray gun as her primary painting tool to create on-site paintings. She uses strongly colored swaths of paint across the walls of her exhibition rooms, public billboards, entire houses and any natural surroundings such as soil and tree trunks. Using a spray gun, she is able to liberate the application of paint from its immediate connection to both the painter’s body and any predetermined surface. Grosse traverses established borders of objects and architectural settings to create a dissensual order of reality. Ultimately, Grosse’s paintings not only rework divisions that cut across the visible world of shapes, but also the fundamental division between the visible and the invisible. Disregarding established functions, attributions and hierarchies, Mumbling Mud offers Shanghai audiences new interpretations of art.
