City cut down to size over super- tall bus stop signs

Officials in Jianyang, Sichuan Province have been facing some harsh criticism over a long- standing issue – the city’s impractically tall bus stop signs.

Commuters in the city of Jianyang have been complaining for years about the signs so tall the text is not visible from the ground.

The signs are an average 2.6 meters tall, the highest reaching 3.48 meters.

“The bus schedules are so tall and the font is extremely small,” sand a Jianyang resident, “It’s really a challenge to see the listed stops.”

The reason for the unusually tall signage sounds a little far- fetched. According to the bus company, they were designed to “avoid injuring passengers’ heads.”

Bringing the 400- odd bus stop signs down to size will cost more than 600,000 yuan ($ 86,842), the company said.

A city proposal to correct the issue has been stuck in the pipeline for more than two years, media reported.

“The renovations have already been included in our plan,” a city official explained, “we are just waiting for it to be approved.”

The city’s sluggish response has so far not earned it any positive press or comments from netizens.

“Administrators should come down and try to read the signs themselves,” read a commentary on China Central Television.

“Even Yao Ming couldn’t read what’s on those signs,” commented NetEase user “Carv3kb.”
