Suspected Chinese killer on the run in deadly Ghana shooting

The lead suspect in the deadly shooting of two Chinese nationals in Ghana is on the run as local police detained more than 30 Chinese residents following the incident.

A third Chinese national injured in the shooting was in hospital and “his life was currently out of danger,” the Embassy of China in Ghana said in a statement on Monday.

The suspected shooter, whose surname is Wu, quarreled on Saturday night with fellow townsmen from the city of Yulin in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the statement said.

Chen Mingjin, a consular official from the Chinese Embassy in Ghana, told the Global Times on Monday that the incident is still under investigation and the embassy will promptly update the information on its website.

Wang Shiting, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, asked police to coordinate their search for the suspect and properly treat the 30 detained Chinese nationals.

The embassy would follow the case and asked that Ghana police “protect Chinese citizens’ legitimate rights and interests with great efforts.”

Anyone who has been confirmed with a legal identity in the country will be freed immediately, the statement said, citing Ghana police.

Investigators found arms and ammunition at the site in western Ghana, according to the statement.

The embassy also warned Chinese nationals living in the country should abide by local laws and legally go about their business.
