Views of Hollywood classic Gone with the Wind have seen a significant upward trend on Chinese streaming platforms after it was pulled from streaming platform HBO Max amid current protests against police racism and brutality in the US, according to research by consulting agency Global Research

Center on Monday.

According to the Global Research Center, daily views of the film in its entirety ranged from 10,000 to 16,000 from June 1 to June 8, but after HBO Max pulled the film, views rose dramatically going from 11,300 on June 9 to 31,900 views on Saturday.

The data was collected from five Chinese streaming platforms: Tencent Video, iQIYI, Youku, Sohu Video and ixigua.

Similar increases have also been seen in the US.

According to reports, DVD sales of the film on Amazon rose to the top of the film and television category, while the film also surged to fifth place on the iTunes movie category on Thursday.

US President Donald

Trump once expressed his liking for Gone with the Wind at a campaign rally while he ridiculed the Academy Awards 2020 for awarding South Korean film Parasite Best Picture.

Gone with the Wind, released in 1939, tells the love story between aristocrats Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler and stars Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Hattie McDaniel and Olivia de Havilland. The story takes place on a plantation outside Atlanta during and after the Civil War in the US.

HBO Max representatives have said the film will return to the platform with an introduction to its “historical context.”
