Curious Settings

-

I remember the first time I saw pictures of Diana Vreeland’s home. It was a revelation – wonderfully eclectic and a rhapsody in red, it was a physical representation of her eccentric tastes and irreverent style, and proof of how character can truly change a space. It’s not often that you find homes that challenge the notion of elegance and good taste, and though I’m inclined towards minimalism, I’m also drawn to imaginative interiors such as those designed by Dimore Studio and Autoban.

More than millionaires or celebrities, I find it most interesting to peek inside the personal spaces of artists, stylists, filmmakers and the like. Judging from the popularity of publications such as and I’m definitely not alone in my curiosity about the way the creative set lives. This month’s issue centres on creativity – from a feature on the workspaces of three Hong Kongbased studios to a story detailing unconventional ideas on how to play with colour, there’s plenty of eye candy as well as practical advice to help you get creative with your space.

One of my favourite stories is which senior deputy editor Beverly Cheng produced in Vietnam. The ingenious work of Tropical Space shows that creativity doesn’t only mean covering your blank canvas with graphic wallpaper or painting a room in a bold hue, it also means rethinking and re-evaluating how one lives. The way the design firm utilised local materials, coupled with its intelligent approach to maximising the 900sqft space, goes to show that a clear idea and point of view is what matters most.

Beyond the inspiring ideas in the pages that follow, there’s plenty more on our website at homejournal.hk. I also hope you drop by Creative Cocoon installation at this month’s Affordable Art Fair, running from May 13 to 15.
