Any designer will tell you that each project is a creative collaboration. When interior architect Alice Chow set out to remodel her parents’ home in Tai Kok Tsui, however, her family gave her an encouraging carte blanche to do as she saw fit with their spacious, two-floor abode.
Though she had free rein on the look and feel of the space, Alice had her parents’ interests at heart when she transformed the existing closed-off kitchen and adjoining rooms into an airy open-plan kitchen and dining room. The designer knocked down two bedrooms to make space for a cooking theatre so that her mother could cook while entertaining the family and their many visitors. To satisfy her father’s wishes, she installed a traditional fish pond on the ample terrace, put in large sliding doors and glass partitions to bring nature into the home, and created vantage points to admire the sunny terrace from the first floor of their flat.
Glass panels also bring a compact garden feature into the guest bathroom, which has become Alice’s favourite spot in the whole home. "It’s a hidden toilet with a surprise," says the designer.
