Though there was seemingly limitless creative freedom on this project, it certainly met its fair share of obstacles. Alice’s parents purchased the upstairs flat with the intention of expanding their home into a two-floor space, but putting in a staircase led to a drawn-out application process via the Buildings Department. Other issues arose due to the home’s dated drainage system. "Because this is an existing apartment, not a house, there are many piping issues that affected the architecture," says Alice. She was lucky to have contractor and project manager Aaron Kuan with his team from Boundless Building Works on hand to assist in overcoming unexpected hurdles along the way.

The ambitious design wound up being two years in the making, from the initial concept through to completion. Despite it all, Alice’s strong and steady perseverance as well as a clear plan set the course for the successful design seen today. She says, "In my design practice, I always think of a logical layout; planning is the foundation to achieve a good design." //
