Along with sunlight and space, the couple were particularly interested in avoiding the overwhelming brightness that was prevalent in their previous apartment. They decided to rely on a humble palette of creams and browns, allowing their art and decor pieces to fill the space with vibrant fervour.

Once the couple had decided to make the most of all underutilised space, every room in the 1,750sqft apartment was gutted, rebuilt and refined. "We reconfigured the entrance and opened up the kitchen to be open-plan, but also much bigger than the original one," says Shy. During construction, the couple’s renovation was smooth and unexpected. Strong elements in the form of structural beams, which remained from the 1970s, allowed Bruce to redesign the space without any limitations. The reinvigoration meant that not only was the space uncompromisingly opened up, but also that natural light poured in.

The spacious kitchen was designed for entertaining as they love welcoming their family and friends home. Practicality was the priority here, hence the extensive use of Corian countertops from DuPont and the inclusion of plenty of storage space concealed behind black-lacquered cupboard doors. It's also a flexible space – the kitchen can be closed off though the doors are often left open so the family can enjoy casual meals at the eat-in bar area.
