An ingenious system of wooden slats was added to the ceiling of the sitting room, which can be opened to let in sunlight. The walls were originally covered with wooden panels, lending the house a rather sombre air – Ching removed these to harmonise with her warmer, lighter look.

Aside from aesthetic changes, there were plenty of practicalities to take into consideration, too. The renovations revealed a handful of problems that the well-loved home had garnered over the years, from a finicky oven to a mysterious leak in the master bedroom that Edmund jokingly called the Yellow River. "When there was a typhoon or a storm, he could hear the wind in his bedroom," recalls Ching. "And then, when we were doing renovations, we moved the bed and found a hole there."

Certain aspects of the home were kept the same, including the beautiful staircase and the ceiling in the master bedroom, which Edmund loved. The traditional dining chairs, also, were retained from
