MY SPACE
Jewellery designer Monica Vinader invites us into her countryside studio in North Norfork, England
Longlands, a 9,000sqft converted sawmill from the 16th century in the UK’s North Norfolk has become the centre of creativity for contemporary jeweller Monica Vinader and her staff of 45, who compose most of the brand’s design, customer care and visual merchandising teams. Though a seemingly unlikely location for an office, Monica grew up in the area and saw the potential of the space – particularly with its high ceilings and the historic, exposed brick facade, which gives the building its old-world charm. "I love the original structure of the building and I wanted to keep as many of its features as possible while injecting the brand colours of aubergine and gold," she says.
Floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights bring plenty of natural light into the open-plan office, helping transform Longlands into a bright and cheerful atelier. Monica explains, "Light is really important, especially for our design team, who work so closely with gemstones and diamonds. So we installed skylights to create an airy, light-filled office."
Monica has added hints of her own character, with personal items that she’s collected from around the globe. Most of the furniture was sourced by an antique dealer in London who Monica has worked with a long time, and on her desk are a collection of porcelain bowls she has acquired over the years from her travels to India and South America. Her love of antiques also shines in the meeting rooms, which showcase travel photography by Harry Cory Wright and Mark LuscombeWhyte, and in the 17th-century walnut Spanish country bench that welcomes guests at the entrance. The communal dining area is one of the most popular places for the employees to hang out, with its very high ceilings from which the standout 1950s Sputnik chandelier hangs.
A courtyard, landscaped by British garden designer Susannah McDougall, adds to the office’s country-home appeal. With such mood-enhancing interiors, a large outdoor area for walks and close proximity to the ocean, it’s no wonder that many of Monica Vinader’s London-based staff relish the opportunity to have meetings at Longlands.
