In Milan, Visionnaire’s art director Eleanor Cavalli decorates her abode with sensual shades and the company’s key pieces
When Eleonore Cavalli moved from Bologna to Milan with her family two years ago, she exchanged a childhood home filled with memories for a new apartment in one of the most international and dynamic cities in Italy. "We moved for both business and personal reasons," she says. "The eldest of our two sons, Matteo, is a dance student at Accademia del Teatro alla Scala Milan, and we decided to support him in his path by living with him in the same city."
Her new home is located in Sant’Ambrogio, the historical heart of Milan, where architecture from different historical periods sits next to ancient Roman ruins. The apartment is in a historical building and overlooks the park, the stillness of the area only interrupted by the bells of the Basilica. Eleonore may have left the countryside behind, but the peacefulness of her neighbourhood can make her feel like she’s still surrounded by nature.
As the art director and head of communications at luxury furniture brand Visionnaire, Eleonore came up with their home’s design together with her husband, Marco Morandini. "The property met the needs of our family very well, but its composition didn’t value one of its most attractive features: natural light," says Eleonore. With the aim to bring that charm to the forefront and create a more contemporary look, the couple had a few walls demolished in order to transform the living room into one large open space, rather than four rooms divided by a series of corridors. She cites the living room as the space they value the most. "It’s the heart of our home," she says. "It’s open, bright, and where we share different moments of the day, from breakfast to study and work."
Of course, after working at Visionnaire for almost 20 years, Eleonore has amassed quite a collection of pieces from the brand. "Today, some of these pieces are considered among the best of what Visionnaire has sold, such as the Brunilde lamp and the Ginevra sofa," she explains. "We like to combine these pieces with vintage designs and contemporary accessories to create a sort of confrontation." The couple have been impressed by how easily adaptable Visionnaire’s pieces are to different aesthetics – a definite plus in the context of their home, as they enjoy mixing and matching different colours, textures and styles. "We like to mix soft and warm materials like velvets with cold ones, like stainless steel, bronze and crystal,” explains Eleonore. "We enjoy the different tonalities of beige paired with bold colours."
Aside from the design, the homeowners’ personalities are also infused into their home via the impressive collection of artworks they have amassed over the years. "We are passionate collectors,” says Eleonore. "We collect works by Italian and foreign artists – oil paintings by Domenico Grenci, collages by Bottom & Bruno, and other works by Loris Cecchini, Enrico T de Paris and Susy Gómez," adding that it’s important to create breathing room for the artworks in between the Visionnaire and designer furniture pieces.
With a design that accommodates their passions and the rhythms of their daily lives, this stylish couple has created a space that looks as though it will grow into a family home filled with intimacy, just like the one they left behind. //
