THE NEW NORM

- EMILY LEUNG, PUBLISHER

Lessons learnt from 2020 and the long periods of social distancing have undoubtedly made all of us reflect on both a personal and global level. What matters, what doesn’t and how do we recalibrate our current norms and practices to adapt to the new, all the while ensuring our actions and our work is filled with purpose and meaning. Ed Bakos, the CEO of Champalimaud Design recently said, “We need to find the soul in what we are doing. This is a moment ripe for invention.”

Like every industry, the interiors and design sector has been rocked with challenges, yet we have observed so many take this time as an opportunity to reset, revamp and subsequently, restore hope. As Soo K. Chan, architect and founder of SCDA stated, “I think we all used to believe our profession could change the world. But this has to be a collaborative effort of designers, developers, different authorities and the market in order things to really happen.”

My response to these experts is that Home Journal will, as an authoritative design media, do everything in our power to spotlight and showcase issues, people and design matters that are important. As I believe it all starts with education and furthering that, inspiration. In this issue, we feature two stunning, calming homes in our city (Pg 74) and (Pg 100), ideal for relishing in peaceful moments, as well as sustainably chic interiors in Vancouver (Pg 82), India (Pg 92) and London (Pg 108). Conversation spotlights our recipients of Emerging Designer of the Year, Lim + Lu (Pg 44), while our Report story uncovers all the highlights and awardees of Home Journal’s 40th anniversary event (Pg 52).
