Bold new beginnings

-

With every new year comes new goals and perspectives.

Gracing the cover of our first issue of 2022 is a 5,000 square-foot men’s salon in Tsim Sha Tsui by celebrated make-up artist and stylist RickyKAZAF, with his colourful character and playful flair weaved throughout.

This is a project very special to us, not only because it marks the first all-round men’s styling salon in Asia, but it’s also the first interior design project brought about by Home Journal and the suave make-up KOL via multiple pitching processes and reviews exclusive to members of the Asia Designers Community. Taking part in the pitch has been a lot of fun for us, as has the process through which the new salon has unfolded. Find out more on page 42. On our working theme of “new beginnings”, we have taken a departure from the “less is more” Nordic and Japanese minimalist aesthetics that have been dominating the design landscape in Hong Kong for years, and have gone for something maximalist, loud, and even dramatic, for a change.

With this in mind, we present to you a fanciful pattern-on-pattern space on page 72 conceived by interior and textile designer Anna Spiro, which serves as both a satellite office and a showcase apartment slated for rental use in the future.

Housed in an art deco building in a Brisbane suburb in Australia, the space abounds with dramatic hand-painted wallpaper inspired by Spiro’s love for the country’s natural beauty. It aims to impress, and I totally fell for it.

If you, like me, are ready for a punchy touch-up at home, flip to page 20 where we serve up thoughtfully curated picks for you to ring in the new year with taste and style.

On behalf of the Home Journal team, we wish you all a glorious year ahead.
