Expect the unexpected

- JENNIFER CHAN Managing Editor

Compiling this issue has been such a thrill for us as it was

done mostly on the fly. What was meant to be our annual Art issue has been pushed back two months to coincide with two major art events in town that have been put off until May in response to the Omicron surge. Not to mention the lockdowns, closure of some businesses and the fact that being homebound left us with no choice but to put production and interviews on hold.

All of this meant a near complete redo of the issue which the team had been preparing for months. If there was anything we learnt from the ride, it was to roll with the punches, adjust to the unexpected and savour all the thrills that come with it.

If you, like us, had little choice, but to turn your cosy home into your work headquarters, this issue could be your ticket to keeping up the good work. Take inspiration on page 34 as we present a list of work-from-home stunners that promise to keep you driven and motivated. From a dedicated room of your own to an interleading study, each set-up offers practical tips to help you pull together the ultimate home office.

In Destination, we take you deep into the wilderness of Tswalu Kalahari to get up close and personal with some of the most compelling wildlife in South Africa. Between rolling hills, a wideopen savannah and starry skies, you get a rare chance to revisit your relationship with mother nature – and yourself – and to savour the raw wilderness at the theatrical Klein JAN restaurant.

Other highlights of this edition include a superlative Ap Lei Chau residence on page 44, a Parisian home filled with Brutalist art on page 60, and our edit of bold homeware bursting with joy and colours on page 28.

With our road back to normal life uncertain, there’s no better time for us to learn to be resourceful, improvise as we go along, and evolve from it. Be safe and well, and enjoy the issue.
