Hong Kong Tatler Best Restaurants (Hong Kong / Macau) - - Contents - Charmaine Mok Editor

In the last 12 months since our 30th anniversary edition of Hong Kong Tatler Best Restaurants, the city has become an even better place to dine. We’ve witnessed it in the spate of restaurant openings, a trend that shows no sign of slowing down, and in the quality of the food and drink that we have been privileged to experience. We’ve welcomed new chefs to our shores – individuals who have brought with them thrilling new points of view – and dined in spaces that, by virtue of their design alone, transported us to another era.

Each week, it seemed, brought with it a frisson of excitement as the next newew thing threw open its doors. Not all were successes – we’ve had our share of questionable dinners, wasted bills and stomach space – but among the hits, there have been many that have made a considerable impression.

This fact couldn’t have been better reflected than in our annual readers’ choice poll, which canvasses the opinions of the people to crown the region’s best new restaurant. This year, compiling the six-strong shortlist has been especially difficult, owing to the number of outstanding restaurants that have opened in the qualifying period. There were plenty more that have impressed, challenged and, above all, delighted us, but only one could take home the coveted prize: turn to page 86 to see how the public voted.

As well as discovering new favourites, we’ve also reaffirmed our love for the old faithfuls. Every year, we go through the painstaking process of reviewing more than 200 restaurants to determine the cream of the crop, based on the recent experiences of our panellists, to cherrypick the 20 restaurants that have impressed us the most. Head to page 41 to see this year’s Top 20 Best Restaurants.

We’ve also been hard at work on the digital equivalent of the guide, HongKongTatlerDining.com, where you’ll find even more detail on the restaurants you see in this book, plus the latest dining news, videos and reviews. The site, which is published in both English and Chinese, is the product of a team of passionate, food-loving writers who are dedicated to showcasing the most exciting facets of our culinary landscape.

This year, we’ve introduced the first feature of its kind in Hong Kong – a list of the latest restaurant launches and opening rumours, updated in real time. You won’t find a better resource out there with its finger firmly on the dining pulse.

And what a heart-racing year it has been for lovers of fine dining and those who love to eat, drink, and make merry. As Hong Kong Tatler Best Restaurants enters its 31st year in the city, we hope you enjoy reading the guide as much as we enjoyed compiling it.
