Curved across a rocky outcrop in Glapen, Norway, the Lofoten Opera Hotel is an arresting sight. The futuristic-looking 11,000sqm low-rise structure, which loops around a central courtyard, incorporates a hotel, apartments, spa facilities and an amphitheatre in a setting offering excellent hiking and other outdoor activities. The spectacular location, with its backdrop of rugged mountains and magnificent views across the ocean, gives the sense of being in the midst of nature experiencing the elements while feeling cocooned and protected. The unique building was designed by awardwinning Olso-based firm Snøhetta, known for its emphasis on sustainability and its projects’ sensitive interaction with their surroundings. While the hotel is undoubtedly remote, it’s well worth the journey. The Lofoten area is one of 18 national tourist routes in Norway and is very popular with hikers and nature lovers.
