To Our Readers
What a year 2017 was! It was a major landmark for Hong Kong Tatler, our 40th anniversary—four decades of chronicling the essence of this wonderful city. With our deep connections in society, we’ve been able to record the most glamorous and important events over that period, and to gain the insights and perspectives of the influential figures shaping the city. The year’s numerous anniversary celebrations came to a climax with the Hong Kong Tatler Ball, a splendid affair held at the Grand Hyatt in September (p.56). From political and business heavyweights to celebrities, philanthropists and society darlings, close to 400 of Hong Kong’s best and brightest attended the social event of the season.
We love to cover great parties, and 2017 had a good share of grand celebrations, such as Michelle Ong’s First Initiative Foundation dinner (p.68), which showcased the work of five celebrity chefs and a programme of inspiring musical performances, and the Ambassadors Ball (p.70), at which our very own chief content officer and managing director, Sean Fitzpatrick, performed with his band, Chordus Interruptus.
Another highlight of the calendar was the unveiling at an exclusive party of the second class of Generation T (p.58), a platform we created in 2016 to recognise and celebrate the city’s most promising emerging talent. We called on a panel of business and cultural veterans, a group we call the Tatler Tribe, to help identify 50 outstanding performers in a number of sectors, from education and technology to film, art, design and the media. The panel included, for example, hospitality guru Yenn Wong and architect André Fu, who are both members of our 500 List (p.110).
Speaking of the 500 List, as society evolves from year to year, new figures rise to prominence, meaning others have to make room for them. Compiling the list is a difficult process requiring much research and consultation. We hope you agree with our judgment—which we also applied to what people were wearing through the year. Check out Hong Kong’s Best Dressed (p.98) for 50 of the most stylish A-listers seen out and about. We take fashion a step further with a jealously inducing look into the dressing rooms of six of the city’s chicest women (p.86). And for a nostalgic look back at some familiar faces from our photographic archive, turn to page p.76.
We trust you will enjoy reliving the memorable moments recorded in the following pages, the best of 2017. And you can count on our team to capture the best of what’s to come in 2018. — Kimberly Hu, Director of VIP Relations, Editorial and Events — Christian Barlow, Society Editor
