WHAT Asian Cultural Council Hong Kong Gala Dinner WHEN November 17, 2018 WHERE PMQ
The presentation of the Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller Award was a highlight of the 30th anniversary dinner of the Hong Kong chapter of the Asian Cultural Council. The chapter’s first dinner in the city—but one it plans to make an annual event—took place at the Qube at PMQ. The award went to Hans Michael Jebsen in recognition of his long-running support and contributions to the council. A live auction, with Elaine Kwok of Christie’s wielding the hammer, took place to raise funds. The lots included a work by Chinese contemporary artist Wai Qingji, a 2006 fellow of the council, which was painted to celebrate the 30th anniversary. Another notable lot, which sold above its estimate, was a visit and lunch with a 1994 fellow, Chinese artist Cai GuoQiang, at his OMA-designed studio in New York. The evening’s entertainment included an interpretative dance performance, Pulsars between Infinity and Nothingness, choreographed by 1993 fellow Allen Lam. Carol Lin, a 2006 fellow, performed a powerful rendition of Gypsy Song from Carmen. Another standout presentation was a reading by 2013 fellow Yeung Yang of 1990 fellow Leung Ping Kwan’s poem On the Road, a Wanderer.
